Devil, Gluttony

Spirit Strategist

Spirits from the Wastes are called "devils." They earn the title. They're real mean sons of bitches.

There are seven types of devils—one for each of the deadly sins. To a devil, a mortal creature committing a sin is delicious food. A fib is a snack. False witness is a feast. A gluttony devil is given here as an example. Wiggle the stats around to create devils of different types.

Devils range from small to titanic, and are riots of corporeality. Gluttony devils are on the smaller scale and covered with mouths. They are nothing but mouths. Their joints—elbows, knees, wrists, etc.—hide hungry little mouths. Their stomachs are spheres of annihilation.

A gluttony devil will offer the adventurers a bargain: for the rest of their life, he'll bring them whatever food they want to eat. This means the adventurers might never have to care about food again! In exchange, when they're dead, they give the devil permission to eat them. What do they care? They're dead!

If an adventurer agrees, the devil will present a contract written in shit on a hog's skin. The contract is written in an archaic version of Vetus; only Loremasters can properly read it. (Some loopholes in the contract: the contracted must eat all of what the devil brings them; the contracted must never give away the devil-brought food; being devoured means that the adventurer can never be brought back from Death's Door, etc.)

Notes

  • Endless Gullet.

Devils cannot be poisoned. They are immune to the Poison Blood of seablooded orcs.

  • Untouched by Hot Iron.

Devils are immune to any crafted or forged weapon. They are still vulnerable to natural dangers like fire, falls, and drowning. They can even be bashed by a branch or stone.

Lesser dooms

  • Bite.

The devil can Roughhouse to attempt to bite a foe. While bitten, an adventurer is Rooted but moves with the devil. The devil can bite up to four adventurers at a time.

    • While bitten, a foe can be swallowed (see below).
    • While bitten, any Attacks that miss the devil automatically hit a bitten foe instead.

Greater dooms

  • Fiendish Retreat.

Discard a greater doom card to automatically disengage from an adventurer. This action does not count towards the one card per turn limit.

  • Stinking Cloud.

Play a greater doom card to fart out a Stinking Cloud into their zone or 1 zone away, per the spell in Appendix A. All other creatures who begin the round in the cloud become Stunned and draw 1 fewer card at the beginning of the round.

  • Swallow.

If the devil is currently holding someone in its mouth, play a greater doom card to swallow the victim. A victim is held in an extradimensional space until they fall into the devil's stomach. Defeating the devil makes them automatically barf up all swallowed creatures.

    • Victims can use the Test Fate action to test Swords while swallowed.
    • If the victim succeeds 3 times, they make the devil vomit them up.
    • If the victim fails 3 times, they fall into the devil's stomach and are annihilated.
    • Great successes count as 2 successes and great failures count as 2 failures for this purpose.
    • Smart ideas (like feeding the devil something blessed by the Welkin) automatically make them barf up all swallowed creatures.
